50 Paisa Books to $350 e-book reader

Technology does not surprise me, never ! as i strongly believe that there is no limit to human creativity and vision. This is something which GOD has built in to human beings.

It looks like just yesterday , when i used to go with my mother to the nearest bookstore and she used to my buy me short story books (i give credit to those books for my better urdu, other than a genetic transfer from my mothers side as she got her education in Persian, Hindi and Urdu from “Ustads” at home), worth 50 paisa’s only. My father – although not having a direct relationship to Literature, always used to take me to book fairs (it was really a luxury to buy books worth above 50 Rupees) and buy me books. It was always a charm, a luxury to go and get hold of books from bookfairs etc.

If i can recall correctly my first busniess was establishment of a small liberary over cartons. However my family never allowed me to get any money out of my freinds who used to rent a book from that small setup. So it lasted for a week or so …..

Today i am a father of two and dont get chance to read a lot of books (other than online). My wife always pushes the kids to read books . Books have become really expansive, totally commercialized, hundreds of rupees for 20-30 pagers. But despite of all these efforts, the excitement of having books is almost non existant.

And then in this era, i see products like amazon’s “Kindle” Being introduced. Smart & Sexy, from reading to listening, getting translation to dictionary access, newspapers to blogs – you can find/get every thing over the air and the vision and spread does not stop here, tomorrow i am seeing college students holding all of their course materials in devices like “kindle” ( the shift from paper notepads to notebooks has already happend ) submitting their assignments and exam sheets etc. May be my kids would not be required to go to campus, may be they will never hold a paper book in their hand – being a technologist it excites me alot but at the same time would my next generation be able to have the feeling of holding a paper book ? the emotional attachement with a daily diary !!, the newspaper at breakfast !!! signing a contract with a pen …. !!! making and photocpying notes in college/university !!!

But i should not have any fear or regeret on this right ? as my previous generation used to learn alphabets in “sand boxes” or “wooden writers” and i never got exposed to it. So i should accept the change …. this is the only way to reduce the gap ! to become part of this change in a postive manner !

I disagree with the the off-campus part. On campus educations delivers so much more in terms of social learning, attitudes and GK. Technology will complement the on-campus education but should never do away with it completely.
